Pack Reunion
This past week was hectic with visits to the hospital and other goings on, but there was a lighter side. Max came to visit and the pack was reunited. It was fun having everyone around and Mrs. Phos and I appreciated the help from our two daughters (one native and one naturalized), in fact I don't know how we'd have done it without them. Happy weekend!!

Ah to Sleep, Perhaps to Dream
If there is one thing I admire about dogs it is their ability to lie down and be in dream land mere seconds later. No tossing and turning, no trying to get comfortable, just plop down and next thing you know you are chasing dream bunnies...

Thunder and Lightning...
Rough night at sea, sir. I was hoping to capture some images of the Lunar eclipse, but the Wx wasn't cooperating - we have a series of storms moving through the area. I did get a short video of some lightning before deciding it would be best to move back in doors.

Happy New Year
It is that time again, New Years is only a few days away . Lunar New Years, or as we gringos and gringettes have come to call it “Chinese New Year’s”, though most of Asia celebrates. It is time to get a haircut, sweep out the house, and prepare for new and hopefully bountiful beginnings.
It is also time to send my kitchen god on his merry way to join his fellows. Though not a religious sort by nature, I post a picture of him and his family in my kitchen and so far he has been doing a good job of keeping things running smoothly. Tradition has it that you seal his mouth with sesame paste or other sweet so he can’t blab about what you have been up to with the other gods, then burn his picture to send him on his way, replacing the old picture with a fresh one. The picture I use is at the top, I am not sure who drew it, just found it on the internet and have used it ever since.
I hang couplets and firecracker decorations by my front door to scare away evil, and I might say stupid, spirits who are frightened by the noise of fireworks and can’t tell the difference between real and mock crackers. I’ll dig out my siu mai recipe and have already been dry running some dishes I want to make for the holiday. I usually throw a big party, but with Mrs. Phos’ leg in a cast we are keeping it on the down low this year – just us and the huskies.
Anyway, let me wish you a happy Year of the Rat and may it be a rich and rewarding year for you and yours.

Time to Quit
The oldest woman to give birth is either a 63 year old lady from Southern California or a 67 year old woman in Romania depending on who you want to believe. They aren’t the only ones I found as I was looking for the record breaker. I have also known several couples choosing to have children at what I consider an older age, but anything beyond 45 is kind of iffy and 50+ is border line insane. Aside from the risk to the health of the baby and mom, there is life after the birth to consider. The birth itself is the easy part – taking into consideration the baby is using 60 year old plumbing he probably comes out like a dragster out of the chute. The tough part is going to be raising junior, and up until a while ago I had forgotten what it was like to try to keep up with a baby, even one who is well behaved.
Our grandson came to stay with us for a day, which was nice, however I soon learned how very out of shape I am. He is a good baby – I am not just saying that out of pride, he is a very happy child and very fast to boot. Though still experimenting with standing, he can scoot almost faster than a racing husky and I know this because both of our huskies had to really dash to keep out of reach. There are diaper changes, cleaning up, feeding, cleaning up, play time, nap time (maybe) changing diapers, cleaning up – you get the picture. If you are a parent you have been through all this – it has been some time for me so it was kind of a refresher course. Chasing the little guy around the house was a full time occupation. He was fascinated with the dog door, but we didn’t think he was ready for the wilds of our backyard or the possibility of tumbling into one of Yukon’s bottomless pits, so we had to had him off at the pass. The kitchen was also very interesting, he wanted to check it out in the worst way – perhaps the cooking gene is starting to manifest itself.
The point is, even if the baby is a “good baby” how is a 67 year old going to cope? We only had our boy for a few hours; she is going to have him 24/7/365. You have to wonder if she really thought things out before trying to break a record or is just grooming the kid to be the new motor for her wheel chair.
