The Fourth of July Come n' Gone
The Fourth of July weekend, trip to the lake, fireworks, parades, time to fire up the grill, and embarrass the dogs. I didn’t do the lake or the parade, but the fireworks have been going off in the neighborhood for the past several nights, so I am covered there and do have pictures of huskies in dignity crushing hats, as you have seen.
BBQ’d a Pork Butt for some Carolina Style Pulled Pork. It takes 6-8 hours at around 200 degrees, constantly replenishing wood chunks and charcoal, but it is worth the effort.
I started out with my pork butt (AKA pork shoulder – don’t ask) injected it with a mix of apple cider vinegar, cayenne pepper, and brown sugar, then applied a mustard base, followed with a spice rub.
Placed it on the grill using indirect heat, coals and wood chunks on either side of the meat and a pan of beer directly under (helps with moisture and flavor)
Took it off when the pork was falling off the bone and internal temp was 170-180 degrees. At this point it looks like a meat meteor with a thick burned sugar “bark”.
Use a couple of forks to separate the meat, or “pull it” and we’re good to go.
Hope you all had a good Fourth, or good weekend depending on where you are from and thanks for stopping by!

JIN: Thanks, hope you had a great Fourth as well, food sounds good, the Portabellas would haev gone great with a steak...
it sure looks like it was alot of food, fun and fiesta! Good for u kid :)
Keshi.
Don't you just love animals? Especially the tasty ones...
Keshi: Fun was had by all, except the pig that donated the shoulder...
SF: When you taste good, life is short. If Darwin didn't write that, he should have.
Loving the hats!
I am so damn hungry now!!! After your's and The Food Porn Godess' blogs, you're killing me!! hahaha!
The dogs do actually look over the moon to be wearing those fabulous hats!!!!!! HAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!
Do that to me one more time
Once is never enough with a man like you
Do that to me one more time
I can never get enough of a man like you
Whoa-oh-oh, kiss me like you just did
Oh, baby, do that to me once again
Poke away PK it's your blog.
( I admit Muskrat Love was a bit odd but everyone makes a mistake now and then.)
By the way - dinner looks like some mighty fine TVP.
Those hats made me get all cooey, and I'm not even there to pet them.
That Pork ass looks tastey. I grilled for the first time yesterday what turned out to be charred out chicken. A little help from the propane, the rest from dried out sticks. A smokey beginning, and a shitty end product. Oh well. You can come BBQ for us next time.
Chickie: Nothing like doggy humiliation.
Cherry: If we all get together and have a virtual Blog picnic I think we're set. You can bring the wine - dry red, please.
FS: Not sure what those lyrics were fomr - not old enough I guess. BEtween you and Jin I am goign to have to find some veggie recipes to try. There's an Italian version of Egg Drop soup (ol' Marco Polo really put the snatchies on China's recipes) I want to try. Might have to modify the broth, though, I think it is chicken. If you guys did fish we'd be in there.
CS: Two words: Beercan Chicken. USe a whoel chicken next time, shove a half full beer can up the large cavity and grill with low indirect heat. The beer will help keep the chicken moist and add flavor. You can also try a brine on the bird prior to cooking.
Be happy to BBQ for you all any time.

Capt & Tennille.
Victory through Vegetables!
(Jin we'll get him to try those BocaBrats yet)
Hahaha!!!
TVP...GOOD one fairscape!
Vegetarians make better lovers!
;-)
Never going to happen... I like veggies but I am a confrimed omnivor.
My dogs make TVP after eating the grass, so if you need any I can send it along...
OMG that pulled pork looks awesome! How come you didn't invite us Phos? Geeez...
BTW: if I were your dogs, I'd TVP (or whatever) right on your boots as retribution for such humiliating public emmmbbbarrrasssmment!!! :))
(they do look cute, tho! Shhh - don't tell them I said dat!)
EC: Textured Vegetable Protein. I was just trying to get a rise out of the grazers. Dogs love silly hats!!
Hey, fairscape...something tells me phos knows more than he's letting on...
How DID you know what TVP was, phos? If its done well, you know, it tastes really good, however, done poorly-ewww it can be really awful! lol.
I'll bring some cheese as well!!!!
Jin: You're better off tossing the TVP out and eating the box it came in - more flavor.
Cherry!: You can bring the cheese, just don't cut the cheese...
lol awww...
Keshi.
You spoil that dog. Don't try and deny it.
Happy belated 4th of July PK. Sounds like you had a wonderful time.
