Summer Again

Happy first day of summer. Summer isn't what it used to be, back when I was just a phosling - school would be out and I and my friends were all footloose and fancy free. Days were sent as cowboys or soldiers roaming the neighborhood and fighting off the other kids, or all getting together to go catch butterflies in the meadow across form our house. Tiger swallowtails, monarchs, cabbage moths, and many others filled the sky above that meadow. It is no longer there, fallen prey to another developer and home builder. The school took what was left and turned it into baseball diamonds. Kids don't have anywhere to chase butterflies anymore.

I can remember sitting in the limbs of a friend's apple tree he and I eating the green apples while we discussed how bored we were. Funny, looking back I wish I could feel bored in the summer again. I miss those innocent joyful times where the only responsibility was to be in before dark and the only challenge which game we were going to play or if it was our turn to be the Indians or the Cowboys. Seems as though we have come along way in stealing the childhood from our kids, forcing them to grow faster then ever.

Maybe I'll just go outside and sit under the lemon tree and reminisce today...

Tomorrow is Midsummer (Litha Sabbat). The cool thing is that my mom is getting interested in Wicca too, so we might do a worship ritual tomorrow. Yay. :)

You brought back so many memories and feelings. Catching frogs, making forts in the trees, riding bikes everywhere, running barefoot across hot tar in the street, gorging on mulberries...

We were lucky to have been young in the times that you described.

it used to be an ocean, though.
You live on the ocean floor, actually. How cool!
or, well, hot.
Then again, it seems your place has gone to the birds....

ok, maybe not.

nice bird pix, though.
Phosbirds, aren't they?

I remember those days like they were yesterday. Sometimes I would just walk for miles and see where I ended up.

I miss those days and hope to give my kids some similar memories.

It would be nice to let the kids wander aimlessly during the summer, btu the days of innocence are long gone. Every news article is full of kids being grabbed, drive by shootings where innocent bystanders get caught up and so forth. It is not a pleasant world any longer, not the world I grew up in unfortunately. I am trying to figure out where things went so wrong...

I remember being outside during the summer. I have to prod the boys to get them to stay out there for a lengthy time. They like to follow me around the house and tell me how bored they are!

I was never bored. I'm an only child, and I've always found that an only child (or the youngest where the older siblings were 'too old' to play with them) were much better at entertaining themselves.

But oh, summer days spent at the cottage, chasing butterflies, bullfrogs and minnows. I'll never forget June 24th, 1983 - I was almost 11! - where my best friend, my cousin, and myself, had draped some sleeping bags over the biggest inner tube you've ever seen, parked ourselves in it, and watched the most impressive meteor shower you've ever seen. How the heck can you be bored doing that?

I've also noticed that a few of my old haunts have been ripped up, torn down, and generally taken over by developers. Sad. Now I know how dad felt when I was a kid, and he'd tell me "That's where my school USED to be. Now it's a mini-mall..."

Today, in your honor, I will make myself a nice pot of iced coffee, I will serve myself a nice big mug, slather it with whipped cream and sprinkle some maple sugar flakes on it. I will take it to my balcony, and think of you, and wish I could just offer you one! :) (I hope you like coffee!)

OH, and the Goddess likes the heat of the Sun Phos. It nourishes Her creations. I performed a small spell to celebrate Litha (Mid summer). And NO, I wasn't running around Skyclad in the woods... You'd like THAT wouldn't you! ;)
