Saturdays Far Away and Long Ago

Saturday mornings were just for us when my brother and I were kids. We’d whiffle loose change from around the house, then my brother would bike up to Mulder’s Red Bell market. Once there he would exchange the loot for candy and lots of it. Maybe a giant Hersey bar, an entire bag of malted milk balls, or six boxes of brand named candy for a quarter (milkduds cost a nickel a box). We’d gorge ourselves while watching the Banana Splits show. When mom got home from work she’d ask if we wanted lunch, but somehow we were never hungry

My favorite Saturday morning treat were Chips Ahoy chocolate chip cookies. When you got tired of them you could go out in the front yard and wing ‘em out into the neighborhood. Get the right spin on the cookie and it flew a country mile.

Sometimes I miss those Saturday mornings.

/t.: It keeps you young, doesn't it? I still try to see how many Oreos I can get in my mouth at one time. Mrs. Phos loves that, especially when we have company.

LL: All that candy it is a wonder my brother and I still have our teeth.

SL: Grandpa Phos is enjoying a Kiltlifters, actually.

money seemed to go a long way in the candy department. Malteezers, the name of the malt chocolates.

mhh sounds like fun. I don't rememeber anything special about the weekends being a kid - lots of time outside, biking, skating or just goofing off.

caramaena: I don’t know what happened, - when I was a kid the Banana Splits were hilarious, but when I happened to see the show again a few months ago, it just came off as mildly annoying. I don’t know if my sense of humor has changed or my expectations have become a little higher.

EC: Gotta love ‘em and that’s for sure!

WC: that is one of those songs you can’t get out of your noggin after you hear it. I’ll be right over.

tkk: I’ve heard of malteezers, but we usually got a brand called Brachs, or a carton of Whoppers”

kb: They were costumed characters that were always up to some shenanigans. There were serials presented like Danger Island and some cartoons. You can check them out at :

dak: No school – that was special!!

I also remember my childhood Saturdays & Sundays as something special I am not able to reconstruct these days.
