That Ain't Cold or Everything is Relative...

I had occasion to speak with an officer up in Goose Bay, Newfoundland (thanks /t.).  While he is still a southerner to nanuk, he is pretty far North.  He asked how the weather was in AZ and I mentioned it had gotten pretty cold, only realizing  my gaff when he started laughing – it had dropped to 22F by the Tiny House, but it was -22F at his.  Moral of the story: no matter how bad you have it, there is someone out there who has it worse. Reminiscent of Arlo Guthrie’s song about the “last guy”.

Speaking of songs, if you have never heard Tom Waits, you ought to beg, borrow, or steal one of his albums. His latest, “Orphans: Bawlers, Brawlers, and Bastards” is a good cross-section of the different road his music takes. It is unlikely you will ever hear any of his songs on American Idol though his “Little Drop of Poison” was in “SHREK 2”. He follows a musical path less traveled, which is making music for the sake of the music not just to see how much coin he can put in his pocket by turning suburban white kids into gangstas. He may be the last bastion of Beat philosophy and if he isn’t already considered a National Treasure he should be.

So crank the stereo and the heat and try to stay warm…

DAK I really love Canada, and think Canadians are great folks, but I wish they'd keep their frigid air to themselves..

/t.: Thanks for pointing that out - I need to check things more carefully. Night Hawks is great. "Small Change" is my favorite album.

There is always someone who has it worse. It's nice in Florida this winter. I'm enjoying. I don't EVER remember it being this warm.

-6 here this morning, everything is covered in 1/4" of ice, and looks absolutely beautiful, but there's a lot of trees destroyed by the weight of the ice, so that part isn't so cool... Hah! pun intended, I guess...

Relativity: Last night, I was chatting over the phone with my dad, who's in Québec, and when I told him how cold it was here at -8, he just laughed at me: It was -25, there, -36 with the wind chill factor, LoL! Yup! It's all relative... And apparently, MY relatives like to brag when they have it worse than you! LMAO!

Ok...well, our highs this week will be in the 40's, which sounds down right balmy next to anything less than zero!
My heat works- there's firewood in the back yard, and a pot of chili will be cooking soon...It's all good :)

We sometimes talk about the weather when the world situation is too much to bear. Luckily we still have music to fall back on to remain sane.

Tom Waits as a national treasure? I'm not sure but I would hold him in the same box as my sand dollar, the geode me and my dad found in New Mexico and the picture of my first heart break...

Hey Phos, Tom is kind of hard to take if you have not had someone warm you up to him. Once you get over listening to a couple of songs it grows on you then the next thing you know it is in the full cd rotation in your mix.

Also, do me a favor I am trying to figure out how to get in touch with a any troop deployment in Afgan or Iraq from the Pensacola area to send a care package to them.(handy wipes, tampons, hard candy, socks...you know the normal wish I had some of this stuff.) I just have no idea how to go about it and figure you might have some insite.

l>t: Start with a "Best of" album or hit Amazon.com and play some clips. I suggest "Small Change" or "Rain Dogs", probably want to hold off on "Bone Machine" or "Alice"

MV I made stew the first cold day Stew is comfort food for me. The last two nights I grilled - pork chops the first night and burgers last night. I love to grill. When we live in South Dakota I was known to grill out in the middle of snow storms - I like BBQ that much.

Keshi: These temps are unusual for us, but we won't see the sweltering temps for a couple of months yet.

MS:My brother lives back in WI. They just got the first snow since the big storm in October. Winters there aren't as severe as I remember them, I think there is more then a little merit to the Global Warming theory.

SF:I don't think Tom Waits would fit in the box anyway. Bottom line for me is that his music really moves me.

Gnat: Try checking with the Public Affairs office at Pennsacola Naval Air station or Eglin AFB. Here at Luke AFB they have drop boxes for items for the troops - some orgs have them going directly to their TDY troops, others just shotgun them out to everyone overseas..
