Dirtnado

Only in the 90s today, but windy. When conditions are right and there are some good thermals off the fields, we can get dust devils out here. I have a picture of one I took on the way home. The same dust devil crossed the road a short time later and engulfed my car. I don’t care how tight your windows are, dust from one of these still gets into the car…

I remeber being attacked by one of those as a kid. It was filled with trash... smacked the hell out of me.

/t.: Its the dirtphoons you really have to watch out for though...

ll: The whirling dirt has some great exfoliating properties, it is like being sand blasted. I have been in sandstorms as well, they are more like a huge wall o' sand - you can hardly breathe...

dm: Note to self: roll window down, then take picture. Thanks DM!!

hammer: They do pack a wallop - I just wound up with a car full of dust.

Yes ... We have them here in Egypt too.
In a way, I can foresee them, because the air goes yellow just a couple of minutes before it reaches you.
Then it is about to close the windows as fast as possible.
But as you say, it comes in anyway.

I'll bet you get a mouthful if you can't outrun it!

I'm not too sure I'd like a sand bath inside my car! Yikes-
Very cool photo though! :) But not a cloud in the sky...well, except the dust cloud :)

We also call them willy willies here in Australia.

vm Fortunately they are fairly easy to avoid. I have stopped the car and allowed them to pass in front of the vehicle on numerous occasions.

caramaena:The sounds more poetic then dust devil...
