I'm no Marlin Perkins...

Chickie isn't the only one that got a camera - Santa brought us a new video camera. I need to work on holding the thing still so it doesn’t look like it was shot by Michael J. Fox on trampoline, but hopefully my technique will improve over time. Or maybe not... I decided to capture the antics of our local hummingbird. The bird wasn’t too concerned about being filmed, unlike chickie in her impromptu movie debut.

That hummingbird seems to be compulsively honing and stropping its beak against the rake tines. I'd watch my back, if I were you.

Happy New Year, Phos.

Hummingbird? We don't have them here in the winter, even though it's been in the 50s.

Very cool.

Cherry!: Great to hear from you again! Thanks for the wishes, and right back at you! It felt like something was missing without your posts…

Keshi: Welcome back, hope you had a great holiday! That bird pretty much runs the backyard.

Jin: He’s actually kind of a pig – he won’t let any of the other humming birds near the feeder. Hope you have had a chance to catch your breath after all the holiday baking!

LL: Thanks. As I said, hopefully my video taking abilities will improve…

/t.: I have no life. Some types of humming birds range pretty far North. It is amazing that they fly as far as your neck of the woods in the Spring and then winter in Central America. I don’t even want to fly that far. I will have to find another subject for my pictures.

nanuk:I have had several close calls. They don’t weigh much but they are going the speed of heat when the roll in on you. I think they could probably dart a person.

DAK: I will try to get some video of the huskies this week. They are nice and shiny – they both got a bath today. We wanted to start the New Year with stank free huskies.

Phoenix: Thanks. We get a bunch in the Spring and then another group in the Fall as they pass through on migration. The little Costa’s Hummingbird in the video has stuck around and made the rake his personal perch. I’ve see the Ruby Throated Hummingbird as far North as Mauston, Wisconsin and I have heard of people with feeders up as far as Rhinelander so the birds have quite a range.
