Phos's Very Windy Dusty Day
Cold front moving through and with it lots of wind and in the desert where there's wind, there's dust. The temps have plunged as well with cold Canadian air making its way down here. Talk about unwanted immigration! On the bright side we might get some rain - they already have snow up in Flagstaff.
Took the dogs to the pet lodge for a bath today (let those fools ruin their plumbing) and stopped at a small thrift shop nearby. I was amazed to see something I can honestly say I have never seen in a thrift shop before - a loom. The size and $750 dollar price tag kept me from loading it up in the car. I have always wanted to try weaving but I suspect starting on a smaller scale might be a better idea.

ugh .. the dust ..
my throught is getting scratchy just looking at that photo.
that looks like a jack loom. i've woven on this type of loom before. it was fun.
maybe you should go for a backstrap loom. you could build one ... or a small tapestry loom. heck, you can even build a simple frame loom ...
I blame Nanuk.
No looms looming in my future for now! I've already got too many irons in the fire as it is. It does look interesting though. We have a lot of the Navajo rugs and blankets they weave out here (the ones that aren't shipped in from the PRC, that is) - they are gorgeous.
Nanuk needs to keep his icy air to himself.
If you got the loom, the huskies would probably hold you hostage and make you weave rugs for them.
Better to just avoid that trauma.
Gosh that dust would be gritty, it gets everywhere, I am still remembering the dust from the storm we had here, what a mess to clean up.
Good photo,I hope you do get some rain Phossy dear.
The loom would be lots of fun, weaving your own special designed rugs etc, those Navajoe patterns are gorgeous. ♡
easier to
just buy one
from wal-mart/PRC
sure, it'll contain lead and mercury, and trace amounts of nuclear materials, but you don't pay extra for them
/t.
wow!
Hi Phos, how are ya doin´?
Big surpise to see your photo in the post below!!!
well to tell you the truth, when it comes to high winds - we do also have a little experience with that in Denmark...! anjd since you've been over to Diane's; the place where the paintings come from that she's just posted (Skagen) is in particular stormy! it is there at the most northern tip of Denmark (of course not counting greenland!) where the Baltic and the North Sea meet and well... let's just say conditions aren't usually the calmest. many a fisher man has drown off that coast!
BOO!
I'm weaving about nearly every other night, Phos. It gets expensive.
But if you do take it up you'll have to rename the hounds "Woof" and "Warp".
Indigo Incarnates
I've read that the dustiest place around is Mars. It's got 200-MPH wind and close to zero humidity. So the sand has, over time, been ground down to dust, and the dust has been ground down to even smaller particles called "fines". Very interesting!
You have an award at my blog.
the loom can be made for the price of the wood and at a pace you're comfortable with.
There's a guy at the center that does this and he's all about it.
Dang!
His isn't as pricey as the one you show here, but, I've seen Gene's and I know it can be reverse engineered by even a college graduate like me!
You too...
(too many logs, eh?)
(don't wait til you're fifty-five and looking for something to make a lil extra money with later.
WHAT!?
well, don't wait till you're sixty and...
are you kidding me?
Dang! Just retire, already and buy one, dude! After all, that SS check is probably a wowser!
d=))
ooooooopppppssssssss!!!
Hi Phossy dear, I hope you're OK and that you haven't disappeared in that dust storm. :) ♡
Has the dust settled yet?
